ECAT, (Every Child A talker) was a pilot scheme that was run across the county. We were fortunate enough as a setting to take part in the scheme. We have had the opportunity to work alongside a trained speech and language therapist, who supported us and the children in developing and changing the way we communicate with the children and how we support the children in communication.
A child’s ability to develop language depends on being immersed in a rich environment of words, sounds, rhythm, and verbal and non-verbal expression from birth. However there are still many children starting school without the extended vocabulary and communication abilities which are so important for learning and for making friends.

As a setting we feel far more confident about how to support children with language needs as well as our under 2 with their speech development.

We also sue STC (Somerset total communication) where we use signing and objects of reference to support communication in the setting.
